Woodlands displays the changing demographics of Singapore's heartlands; aging populations with increasing health needs. Developing a new regional hospital offered the opportunity to address community needs and green space requirements within a proposed development of general medicines, specialists, care-home and outpatient clinics in a healthcare cluster.
In response, we developed a landscape vision of shared open campus for professionals, practitioners, patients, their families and the neighbouring communities. We advocated a landscape design approach that merged urban “park” and “plaza” typologies into a health focused campus. Coupling health and rehabilitation, recreation and relaxation, personal reflective space and social gathering events, we expounded a healthy landscape programme within a metaphoric ‘healing forest’. This “forest” landscape aims to encompassing expressions of a woodland character, shaded spaces, soft transitions and immersive sensory experiences. A journey back to nature, and the healing powers of the forest.
